JUNE 19, 2014
The WPBA Installation Banquet was held at The Heritage Springs Country Club last night and it was a fabulous evening. A very big thank you to J. Larry Hart, previous Board Member and partner at Carlson, Meissner, Hart & Hayslett for his firm's support as the Social Hour Sponsor for the evening.
The annual event started off with guests arriving at 5:30pm for the social hour and they really enjoyed mingling with colleagues and friends. This was followed by the introduction of the President and the Past President Pinning by Nichole Alvarez-Sowles. After delivering her welcome message to all of the guests, the newly Past President Amanda Colon shared her reflections and acknowledgements during her time as President.
Paula S. O'Neil, Ph.D. performed the swearing in of the new Officers & Directors, followed by Gerald Figurski who honored the late Peter Proly, Esq with some kind words and then presented Pete's wife, Ellie, with the Dan Martin "Friend of the Law" Award. It was an emotional evening as guests remembered their old friend and reflected on past days.
Later in the evening the presentation of the gavel was delivered by Phyllis McCall, President of the West Pasco Legal Support Association. Closing out the evening, the new WPBA President Nichole Alvarez-Sowles delivered her inaugural speech with encouraging words for an exciting year of things to come.
Thank you to all who attended the banquet, we are pleased to know that everyone had a wonderful time!

Sign up for Benchmarks /Informed Voters Project Seminar at Annual Convention !!
Hello, Voluntary Bar members:
An engaging and informative seminar to coach attorneys on how to make Florida Bar Benchmarks and Informed Voters Project presentations about civics topics such as the rule of law, the election of judges and judicial review will be held at The Florida Bar Annual Convention in Orlando on Friday, June 27, from 3 to 5 p.m. Register online at www.floridabar.org. The seminar offers 2 hours of general credit.
Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente is the lead presenter along with Annette Pitts of the Florida Law Related Education Association. Register online at www.FloridaBar.org.
Why Benchmarks and Informed Voters Project?
Surveys have shown many adults lack basic knowledge about their government and the courts. Yet those who learn about the courts and their role in government tend to support them and the work they do. In 2012, education programs about merit retention elections led to increased voter participation in those races on the ballot that year.
The Florida Bar's "Benchmarks: Raising the Bar on Civics Education" program and the National Association of Women Judges' Informed Voters Project offer ready-made presentations that attorneys can use when they speak to adult civic and community groups. Materials are nonpartisan and can be downloaded from The Florida Bar website at www.floridabar.org/Benchmarks.
Attorneys who make Benchmarks presentations can receive one hour of ethics credit for up to three hours in a three-year reporting cycle.
After training, attorneys can sign up to give presentations through The Florida Bar Speakers Bureau and civic and community groups can request speakers through the same online resource.
The Annual Convention is being held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando.
